Brain Storm Play

“A visually arresting and comically haunting look at the ramifications of brain surgery and how one woman finds her way in a reality that is forever different. BRAIN STORM takes you into the operating theatre, to dissect the question; are our brains magic, machines or both?”

Shireen Jeejeebhoy, one of our alumnae, had the amazing opportunity to consult on Writer/Director Taliesin McEnaney’s captivating One-Act play Brain Storm. McEnaney asked Shireen to be both brain injury consultant and dramaturge on the world premiere mounting of her play. The workshop production of Brain Storm won the Toshi Knife Cutting Edge Award at the 2017 Toronto Fringe Festival. Combining dialogue, choreography, and projections, the 2020 mounting immerses the audience into the experience of a young woman whose damaged brain throws her into a new reality.

“Taliesin McEnaney draws on the work of famous Canadian neurosurgeon Dr. Wilder Penfield, the writings of her spiritual medium grandmother, and a brain injury in her own family to craft this unique piece of physical theatre.”

Pay-as-you-can-afford tickets are available on the Brown Paper Tickets site. Attend the play at Dancemakers Studio and enjoy dinner or drinks in one of the many restaurants in the Distillery District before or after.

“How do you make vivid theatre out of brain surgery? Somehow writer/director Taliesin McEnaney achieved that back at its workshop production at the Fringe Festival in 2017 – chosen one of NOW’s best productions and ensembles of the fest.” (Glenn Sumi, NOW Magazine, 1 Feb 2020)

Canada Alpha 90th Anniversary Reunion

(Source: cardsandgifts-direct.co.uk)

2020 marks a big year for Tri Delta in Toronto!

The new decade begins with a new slate being presented at the Toronto Alumnae Chapter’s 2020 AGM on February 3. Then in May, Canada Alpha will celebrate 90 years as a chartered chapter – and the first international chapter – of Delta Delta Delta Fraternity.

The history of Canada Alpha actually starts in 1927. That year, a group of U of T women came together to found a local sorority called Kappa Phi Alpha. Just two years later, they applied to be the first Canadian Charter of Delta Delta Delta. That request was granted, and the process of installation began. On May 24, 1930 at the Royal York Hotel, 28 women were initiated into the inaugural class of Canada Alpha.

If you would like to learn more about the collegiate chapter history, Christine Kralik has written a blog post on our website, available here:

https://torontotridelta.ca/2019/01/18/canada-alpha-history/comment-page-1/ –

May 24, 2020 is the 90th anniversary of that initiation ceremony, and we hope that you will join us for one or more of the events celebrating the first Canadian chapter of Delta Delta Delta.

One such celebration is an anniversary luncheon on May 2, 2020 at Joey’s Eaton Centre, from 11:30 am to 2:30 pm. Tickets are $45 and available in the Dues and Donations section of this website. Circle Degree, the Silver and Golden Circle Ceremonies, as well as celebrations of other membership milestones, will be held for those who wish to participate. Please contact Judith McCutcheon at mccutcheonjudith2@gmail.com if you are, or know of a sister, celebrating one of the milestones of membership.

We encourage you to forward this invitation to any sisters at large with whom you would like to share Canada Alpha’s 90th. Space is limited, so early ticket purchase is strongly recommended.

Come Walking in Memphis with Tri Psi!

(Source: bbkings.com)

Memphis, Tennessee is not only the Home of the Blues, Soul, and Rock ‘n Roll, but it’s also where St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Tri Delta’s philanthropy partner, is located. The vibrant cultural scene and the opportunity to tour the impressive St. Jude campus made Memphis the ideal choice for the next Tri Psi Convention!

The Holiday Inn Express in downtown Memphis will host Tri Psi Convention from June 4-7, 2020 and Tri Deltas are cordially invited! A meaningful mother-daughter weekend. A fun-filled girls’ trip. A romantic getaway. The planned activities and discounted hotel rate lend themselves nicely to any of these options. Find out more on the Tri Psi website:

https://tripsisorority.com/2020-convention

The hotel is within walking distance of many attractions, including the Beale Street Historic District, and is conveniently situated across from the iconic Peabody Hotel and the world-famous Rendezvous restaurant. Our discounted room rate is $149 US per night, which includes a full breakfast. The cost of the breakfast, when purchased separately, is $13.95 US per person. Based on double occupancy, this is a fantastic deal! The discounted room rate is also available on Wednesday and Sunday for those who would like to arrive a day early and/or extend their stay an extra night. The guest rooms were renovated in April 2018, and feature many special amenities and services, like complimentary wireless Internet and mini refrigerators for personal snacks.

The Tri Psis will be conducting initiation at Convention. Tri Delta daughters serve as sponsors for their mothers at this Ritual written by Sarah Ida Shaw Martin. Initiation is open to mothers, stepmothers and foster mothers of DDDs of all ages, not just collegians. Whether your mom attended college, joined Tri Delta, joined a different NPC group or didn’t pledge a sorority at all, Tri Psi sisterhood is open to her. It’s a wonderful way to honour your mom and to share with her the bonds that Tri Psis and Tri Deltas hold dear.

As you can see, a very exciting itinerary has been planned. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at ccklassen@hotmail.com. In the words of singer-songwriter Marc Cohn, I hope you’ll “put on [your] blue suede shoes” and come “walking in Memphis” next June!

Convention 2018- Our Kind of Kind

I had the pleasure of attending two TriDelta conferences this year.  In February I was invited to Collegiate Leadership Conference (CLC) where I shared my story of applying for and receiving the Trilogy Grant after being diagnosed with bilateral breast cancer. I was invited to my first TriDelta Convention where I was able to give an update on my life and properly thank the Foundation and entire organization.

The theme of convention was “Our Kind of Kind” inspired by Sarah Ida Shaw’s plan to found a society that is “kind alike to all.” There’s nothing like a convention of 500+ TriDelta members to show you that we really do all adhere to the same principles of leadership, and sisterhood.

Convention started with a welcome Lunch where we proudly filled a table with Canada Alpha and Canada Delta members. Front and center, our table was patriotically decked out in red and white candies, chocolate loonies, and Canadian flags: thank you to Michelle Mercer for the swag!

At the Awards Dinner the hall was filled with Oscar-worthy gowns. We witnessed our own Arlene Chan recognized with the coveted Woman of Achievement Award for her career as librarian, author, leader in the Chinese-Canadian community, as well as her athleticism in competitive dragon boat racing.  Arlene was honored to be able to share this experience with so many Canadian alumnae.

The Toronto Alumnae Chapter won the award for Overall Member Experience highlighting the strength of our local alumnae chapter and the work of its members.

The fourth of July kicked it off with a lengthy business meeting. Amendments called back to what it means to be brave, bold, kind, and inclusive with our membership. The evening saw the dining room transformed into a backyard barbecue party with a live country band topped off with fireworks shot off to Katy Perry’s… Firework.

Pansy brunch closed convention with keynote speaker TriDelta alumna and Woman of Achievement award winner Catherine Crier.

I am grateful to have been able to attend Convention. TriDelta is a huge operation run by women for women, and it’s empowering to be reminded of the big-picture of it all. It was also a wonderful opportunity to get to know some of my fellow alumnae members and return home with further appreciation for our own Toronto chapter.

Save the date for Convention 2020 in Orlando July 10-12!

In the Bonds,

Martha
