Honouring One Of Our Tri Psis

Some of you may be familiar with Olive Jeejeebhoy, a Tri Psi for over three decades, twice International President and I’ve lost count how many times President of our local Tri Psi chapter. Currently, she’s serving as Scholarship Chair for International Tri Psi. Olive is my mother, and I roped her into joining Tri Psi in my first year as a Tri Delt. At first hesitant, she capitulated and added it to her many volunteer activities. Mum loves Tri Psi, loves her Tri Psi sisters, has spent many, many hours at the chapter house in years gone by with the collegiates, and is always willing to help Tri Delta. As anyone who’s met her knows, she is one energetic giver!

It’s not often we can honour her giving nature, but today’s the day in the Canadian-American season of Thanksgiving!! Mum has not only devoted many hours to Tri Psi over the decades but also to the Scott Mission. Volunteers are the foundation of the Scott Mission, and Mum has been a keystone of their mission for three decades. She transformed their Christmas Toy Room and continues to shine a cheery light of dignity and respect to all the people the Scott Mission serves. This is why the Scott Mission is creating the Olive Jeejeebhoy Award for Faithful Service for the volunteer that best exemplifies initiative, cheerfulness, and faithfulness among other qualities of sacrificial service to the people of Toronto.

I, along with the Scott Mission, have set an ambitious fundraising goal of $5,000 in order to provide an annual award of $100. Please consider joining your Tri Delta sisters and Tri Psi mothers in helping us make this award a reality for a deserving volunteer at the Mission’s upcoming Volunteer Appreciation Tea in April 2020.

Please share this post far and wide! Thank you!!

Come Walking in Memphis with Tri Psi!

(Source: bbkings.com)

Memphis, Tennessee is not only the Home of the Blues, Soul, and Rock ‘n Roll, but it’s also where St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Tri Delta’s philanthropy partner, is located. The vibrant cultural scene and the opportunity to tour the impressive St. Jude campus made Memphis the ideal choice for the next Tri Psi Convention!

The Holiday Inn Express in downtown Memphis will host Tri Psi Convention from June 4-7, 2020 and Tri Deltas are cordially invited! A meaningful mother-daughter weekend. A fun-filled girls’ trip. A romantic getaway. The planned activities and discounted hotel rate lend themselves nicely to any of these options. Find out more on the Tri Psi website:

https://tripsisorority.com/2020-convention

Registration is $186 US per person and includes:

  • Bass Pro Shops at the Pyramid Tour
  • St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital Tour & Boxed Lunch
  • Memphis City Tour

The hotel is within walking distance of many attractions, including the Beale Street Historic District, and is conveniently situated across from the iconic Peabody Hotel and the world-famous Rendezvous restaurant. Our discounted room rate is $149 US per night, which includes a full breakfast. The cost of the breakfast, when purchased separately, is $13.95 US per person. Based on double occupancy, this is a fantastic deal! The discounted room rate is also available on Wednesday and Sunday for those who would like to arrive a day early and/or extend their stay an extra night. The guest rooms were renovated in April 2018, and feature many special amenities and services, like complimentary wireless Internet and mini refrigerators for personal snacks.

The Tri Psis will be conducting initiation at Convention. Tri Delta daughters serve as sponsors for their mothers at this Ritual written by Sarah Ida Shaw Martin. Initiation is open to mothers, stepmothers and foster mothers of DDDs of all ages, not just collegians. Whether your mom attended college, joined Tri Delta, joined a different NPC group or didn’t pledge a sorority at all, Tri Psi sisterhood is open to her. It’s a wonderful way to honour your mom and to share with her the bonds that Tri Psis and Tri Deltas hold dear.

As you can see, a very exciting itinerary has been planned. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at ccklassen@hotmail.com. In the words of singer-songwriter Marc Cohn, I hope you’ll “put on [your] blue suede shoes” and come “walking in Memphis” next June!

Arlene wrote in 2018:

“When Toronto Public Library announced in late 2016 that it was to establish the Chinese Canadian Archive to capture and record the rich heritage of the Chinese community, I was ecstatic. . . The connections to our past are fast fading with the loss of our elders, precious memories and personal memorabilia.”

Tri Deltas at TFR 2017: Carly Klassen, Jenny Dundas, Krystal Mercer, Michelle Mercer & Carrie Illsley

For the fourth consecutive year, members of the Tri Delta Toronto Alumnae Chapter proudly participated in the Terry Fox Run on Sunday, September 17, 2017.

Our enthusiastic team consisted of Carly Klassen, Carrie Illsley, Colin Watson, Jenny Dundas, Krystal Mercer and Michelle Mercer.

Thanks to our sponsors, we raised $1716, or 114% of our $1500 goal! We couldn’t have done it without the generosity of family, friends, and the following Tri Deltas and Tri Psis: Arlene Chan, Carmelina Macario, Corinne Winnel, Eleanor MacLean, Elizabeth Melo, Georgina Klassen, Jena Crone, Joan Lockhart, Jocette Illsley, Laura Knapp, Nancy Gahm and Susan Weston.

Once again, Michelle Mercer was our top fundraiser and Carrie’s partner Colin Watson was our token male. Congrats, Michelle! Thanks for joining us, Colin!

Colin Watson at TFR 2017

This is the only alumnae fundraising activity that takes our chapter out into the community, both in terms of sponsorship (collecting from non-members) and visibility (wearing our letters). So mark your calendar and join us for the next Terry Fox Run on Sunday, September 16, 2018!

With gratitude & Delta love,

Carly Klassen

TRI PSI TRIumphs in Buffalo!

tri-delts-in-buffalo

Toronto Tri Delta Alumnae at Tri Psi Convention

It was an eventful four days in Buffalo that included plenty of sisterhood – with a side of shopping! The 93rd International Tri Psi Convention took place from October 13-16, 2016 at the Millennium Hotel, next to the Walden Galleria Mall.

Organized by the Toronto Tri Psis with Christine Calhoun at the helm, the conference appeared to adopt a similar theme to Tri Delta’s 2016 Convention: “Legislate. Celebrate.” Some of the changes the Tri Psis ratified include replacing their annual gathering with a biennial one and creating the new council position of Membership Director. Plus, International Tri Psi President Olive Jeejeebhoy passed the gavel to fellow Canadian Christine Calhoun, keeping the sorority’s leadership in our Toronto family!

While the Tri Psis were legislating, the guests were celebrating all that Buffalo has to offer. We were treated to tours of Forest Lawn Cemetery and the Darwin D. Martin House Complex. The former is the “permanent home” of illustrious residents like U.S. President Millard Fillmore (and musician Rick James!), while the latter was designed by renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright. The Tri Psis later joined us for a walking tour of the Canalside District, some free time in Niagara Falls State Park, plus dinner and musical entertainment at Top of the Falls Restaurant.

The Tri Deltas in attendance serenaded the other guests with DDD songs at the Saturday night banquet. However, the real highlight of the evening was a heartfelt speech given by Tri Delta and Tri Psi Kathy Massie. Kathy has previously served as DDD’s National Panhellenic Conference Delegate and is currently an NPC Release Figure Method Specialist for formal recruitment. On Sunday, Tri Psis and Tri Deltas concluded the Convention with the Violet Brunch.

The Canada Alpha Chapter of Tri Psi was well-represented by Cindy Blundell, Christine Calhoun, Jocette Illsley, Olive Jeejeebhoy, Sara Joyce, Georgina Klassen, Jeanine Macario, Fuza Majid, Michelle Mercer, Judy Pownall and Doreen Sherk.

In addition to Michelle and Judy, Toronto Alumnae Chapter members in attendance were Sarah Atteck, Katie Blundell, Caitlin Calhoun, Jessica Calhoun, Carrie Illsley, Carly Klassen, Carmelina Macario, Elizabeth Melo, Krystal Mercer, Barbara Morrison and Ashley Pivko.

And we can’t forget our Tri Delta dads and Tri Psi husbands, lovingly known as “Tri Psicles”: Thomas Calhoun, Khush Jeejeebhoy, John Klassen, John Pownall and Gordon Sherk!

Congrats to Christine and her team for an amazing weekend! We hope you’ll consider joining us at future Tri Psi Conventions.

Loyally,

Carly Klassen
