Melanie and Allison are facilitating a DDD discussion about the accessibility and usability of the virtual environment we currently live in.

Physical accommodations surround us in our everyday life: automatic doors,  wheelchair ramps, chirping crosswalks, and tactile paving on sidewalks and the edges of the subway platforms. These modifications allow for everyday tasks to be made as inclusive as possible to a wider audience. 

Though we are now in a situation where our regular daily activities are now online, we often don’t realise our virtual world needs to be made inclusive as well. For this online world, we are just beginning to understand the importance of ensuring our virtual platforms are just as accessible as we would make an in-person event to be. While you may not hesitate to ensure a venue is wheelchair accessible, would you automatically think about whether your platform of choice has closed captions available?

Topics we will be touching on include those pain points that some experience, the standards platforms are being held to, how some of these adjustments can make your experience better and further understanding the difference between accessibility and usability in the digital age.
